Jewellery boxes, card boxes, pen boxes, mirrors and frames — made from the same marquetry as the boards, by the same hands.
Smaller pieces are not simpler pieces. A jewellery box has more corners per square centimetre than a backgammon board, and every one of those corners has to be mitred so the star pattern continues around the edge without a break. These are the objects on which a workshop is judged.
From flat ring boxes to compartmented cases with a lift-out tray. Interiors are lined in velvet or in plain lacquered timber, and lids are available plain, fully inlaid, or painted with a miniature. Hinges are recessed so the lid sits flush when closed.
Fitted cases for one or two decks of cards, for backgammon pieces, or for a small travelling game set. The internal divisions are cut to the contents rather than to a standard, so nothing rattles in transit.
The qalamdan, the Persian pen box, is one of the oldest forms in this craft and still one of the most satisfying. We make it in the traditional sliding format as well as in hinged versions suited to modern pens.
Hand mirrors, standing mirrors and picture frames with khatam borders. Frames can be made to a specific internal dimension if you are framing an existing piece, and we will match the border width to the artwork rather than to a catalogue.
Tea trays, small serving trays and coaster sets. Where a surface will meet liquid we use a heavier lacquer build and say so explicitly, because khatam and standing water are not friends.
Choose between a natural lacquer that shows the bone and brass at full contrast, or a warmer tinted finish. Linings are available in velvet, suede-effect textile or bare lacquered timber, in colours matched to the exterior.
Accessories are the easiest entry point for a shop or gallery: lower unit price, quick to sell, and they introduce customers to the craft before they commit to a board. We can supply mixed cartons across the range.
